MOTION DESIGN

Bringing to life ideas like never before

This marathon motion design competition is our most intense yet. Four solo competitors sprint from start to finish, side by side, frame by frame, to render their way across the finish line. Over this one round of head-to-head competition each designer will put forth their most ambitious efforts to create a 15 second motion design masterpiece on a theme supplied by Cut&Paste–all in front of a live audience.

Competing designers in the Motion Design competition only will get an early start on the day and begin work before doors open. When the show begins, they will continue to work on a side stage, in full view of their crowd. At the end of the round when the 8 hour session has ended, designers will submit their rendered clips and the final work will be played for evaluation by both the judges and audience.

COMPETITOR SELECTION

  • Entries received during the Call For Competitors period will be reviewed by Cut&Paste.
  • Top entrants will be invited to meet with the local Cut&Paste team at Test Rounds to discuss their work. Test Rounds is a weekend event where 2D and 3D candidates will do a simulation. Motion Design candidates will only meet with the local Cut&Paste team, but meeting is required.
  • Four (4) competitors will be selected and announced on the website in advance of the tournament event.

RULES

  • Competition consists of one round, eight hours in duration.
  • Prior to the start of the competition, competitors will be given time to set up their physical and digital workspaces.
  • Tools:
  • (workstation, display, and peripherals) Competitors should bring their own workstations including keyboard and mice. Due to the length of this competition, and based on format testing, Cut&Paste finds that it is to the designers' advantage to work on machines that they are familiar with and that are preconfigured to their preferences.
  • (tablet) Currently a tablet is not provided.  Competitors may bring their own tablets to use in competition.
  • (software) Any motion graphics or animation software offered in the open market are allowed, including but not limited to the following: Autodesk Maya and 3D Studio Max, Maxon Cinema 4D, Adobe After Effects, Lightwave, Xsi Softimage. All software programs are subject to approval.
  • (plug-ins) Trapcode Suite (Shine, Lux, Particular, etc.) are allowed. No other plug-ins are allowed.
  • Competitors may prepare and bring up to four (4) premade 2D or 3D assets including photography depending on the brief. All assets are subject to approval.
  • Competitors may create an unlimited quantity of assets onsite during the competition.
  • Competitors may bring video cameras, green screens, and props for live action recording onsite to incorporate in their videos.
  • Competitors are encouraged to bring sound and/or music to be incorporated in their work.
  • Competitors may bring fonts and typefaces not included in the standard software. All such fonts must be provided by the competitor in advance and must be publicly available (free or by purchase). Proprietary and custom fonts are not allowed.
  • Competitors may not use copyrighted materials in their work.
  • Notes are permitted. Stencils, sketches, and other pictorial or graphical reference materials are prohibited.
