MOTION DESIGN

The Journey continues

Digital Design Tournament 2010 is our most refined year to date. Back once again is the 2D Design competition along with the return of 3D and Motion Design battlegrounds. All three competitions will take place at every Cut&Paste city event during the 2010 tour allowing for designers in multiple disciplines to take part. Check out the links above for for 2D Design, 3D Design, and Motion Design to learn about the rules, regulations and details for each exciting competition.

COMPETITOR SELECTION

For all three competitions Cut&Paste makes the selections based on two factors: portfolio strength and performance ability. The current call for competitors is open to anyone interested in taking part this year. Anyone may compete in any one competition in any one city–all you need to do is submit an entry with a link to your online portfolio. When the Call for Competitors closes, Cut&Paste reviews the entries and based on the quality of work, invites the top candidates to take part in Test Rounds. After Test Rounds a final selection of designers will be made for each competition. Cut&Paste will choose eight competitors for 2D, as well as four for 3D and four for Motion Design. All competitors for competition will be announced online.

TEST ROUNDS

After each entry deadline, Cut&Paste invites select candidates to Test Rounds, weekend events that serve as both auditions and a “first date” with Cut&Paste. Test Rounds provide an opportunity to display one’s design skills, experience what live design feels like, and potentially earn a spot on stage. All candidates are required to attend Test Round dates offered in their city for at least a 30-minute appointment. Here is what to expect:

  • Candidates will be introduced to their local Cut&Paste team, present themselves and discuss their work.
  • Candidates for 2D and 3D competition are expected to perform in a short, simulated competition round that mimics the conditions of a tournament event to get an idea of the designer’s ability to compete surrounded by distractions, creative constraints, themes and the people staring at you while you work. Themes are provided at least two days in advance and the rules are the same at the onstage competition.
  • Motion candidates invited to Test Rounds only need time for a short introduction to the Cut&Paste team, though attendance is still mandatory.

RULES

Each competition format has its own set of rules, so we highly recommend that you read up on their respective page if you are planning to get out there and show your skills. Please note, these are called ‘rules’ and not ‘guidelines’ for a reason. If you have done your homework and still have questions about how things work, feel free to check out the FAQ page or drop us a line.

REQUIREMENTS

For all competitions and in all cities, all competitors must meet the following requirements:

  • If competing in the United States (New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco), you must be at least 21 years of age
  • If competing at any non-US event, you must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must carry a valid passport with at least nine months of validity (before expiration) at time of competition
  • Must have an online portfolio to present their body of work.  If an entrant does not have an online portfolio, creating a quick image album on Flickr works too, for example.

PRIZES

GRAND PRIZE (in each city)

All city champions for each competition (2D, 3D, Motion Design) will qualify for the 2010 Global Championship in New York City in February, 2011.  Each city champion will be provided airfare, hotel accommodations, and local transportation in New York.

Additional prizes for city champions and all other placements are specific to their competition and city and can be found on each City's Event Page under the 2D, 3D, and Motion Design tabs.

GLOBAL PRIZE NOTE (as of August 25, 2010)

Prizes are still being confirmed in many cities.  We know how much you like prizes (we do too), but as many come from our generous sponsors, we are in the process of confirming them.  We thank you for your patience and hope you will enter for the guaranteed and best prize - the opportunity to flex your creative muscles onstage for your friends, peers, and luminaries in your community.  And a trip to NYC for Global Champs ain't bad either.  Stay tuned for updates and see you on the tour!!
